Appearance
A well groomed beard and neatly trimmed hair frame the unremarkable features of Joldag’s face. He dresses in drab traveling clothes, including a hooded cloak of dark grey. He carries a staff, a pack is slung on his back, and several items dangle from his belt: a light crossbow, a case of bolts, a few pouches and a pair of daggers. Tucked into pockets under his cloak are a scroll case, and a wand.
Background
Few know his origin or background, and he rarely, if ever, speaks of it. First born in a large family of farmers, Joldag was unfortunately disabled by physical weakness. He was ostracized by his father for this, though being first born combined with his wit and intellect endeared him to his mother. Though he was the eldest child of five, and four years older than the next oldest sibling, it took years before his three brothers began exploiting his weakness. His sister, the youngest, loved him dearly and even stood up to her other brothers in support of him. This actually made things even worse in the eyes of his brothers, but he returned the affection to her emphatically.
He became fascinated with magic at an early age. Accompanying his father to the local village of Hentil to sell produce, since he had little he could do on the farm, he witnessed a performer who used minor magic to enhance his acts. For years he dreamed of learning magic, and his mother always supported his desire. Knowing he would never amount to much on the farm, his father eventually agreed and looked for a way to rid himself of his weakling son.
On his twelfth birthday his parents had devised a way to accomplish this. Having talked to the village mayor, his father had made a deal with The Inquisitive Mind, the magic academy in Se'traal. Joldag was admitted after initial testing demonstrated his intellect, and he was apprenticed to an older wizard. Years of hardship and long hours each day of study developed a deeper love of arcane knowledge in Joldag. The trials of the academy nearly killed him, but he used his intellect and minor magic to great effect and succeeded on his first try.
Now a full-fledged wizard, he soon realized the limits of the academy. There were only so many spells known amongst all the wizards, and he knew his hunger for arcane knowledge would be severely limited if he remained. Having studied the history of the world and learning of other places, he decided to travel and seek out more knowledge and arcane power.
Adventurous by nature, he accompanied small groups on minor forays into local dungeons and gained a reputation for being a staunch and dependable ally fighting against evil. He also became somewhat of a local legendary hero, especially with the farmers and ranchers, doing all he could to help them and defend their way of life. After several years of such endeavors he had collected a small fortune, enough to equip himself well for travel and pay for passage aboard a ship heading north. He hoped he could find more access to magic, or earn the means to secure a safe place of his own to develop more of it on his own. Someday, he dreamed often, he would be the ultimate master of an arcane academy in a rich city with many potential students to choose from and teach them the ways of the wizard.
Personality
Staunchly stubborn and studious, Joldag is generally quiet but friendly, kind, and forgiving. He has a streak of individuality connected with his wizardry. Though he barely has the strength to carry the most basic gear and his spellbook, and very inept at combat, he utilizes his wits and magic to overcome challenges that arise from this physical weakness.

There are many mundane entries, many have half finished notes on potion brewing or lunar phenomena which seem to have been his main two hobbies. The last few entries however are very different and you read through them with interest.
(the words written in red aren't in red in the book, I'm just colouring for emphasis, they are in fact words where it seems the pen bites very deep into the page and are at odd angles, sometimes unfinished or otherwise unlike the rest of his handwriting, almost as though he was fighting against someone pulling his hand from the page as he was writing.)
Page 1
Ferin says it's useless trying to write anything down but I feel like someone has to try. Every time I think about it it's like my mind wanders and if I try to write any details it's a struggle to get the words on paper, like an invisible force staying my hand. Ferin thinks it's a precursor to some form of attack. He is making preparations in secret. I trust him,we all do. We have to.
Page 2
Th...he...er... can't... zegak! Ferin was right. His preparations are nearly complete. We don't know yet. Too risky. They might find out. It's the only way. Ferin is resisting as best he can but this is not a fight we can win. Not now. We will bloody the enem... so they can be defeated in the future.
Page 3
Ferin has constructed some kind of device to be activated by the members of the Emerald Alliance. I have done my part and locked my ring away. Soon the others will do the same. (This is followed by lots of scribbling where Boras presumably tried to write something but was unable. It's incomprehensible.)
Page 4
We killed thousands today. A hammerblow to both sides. The devastation. What world will we leave our children? I understand now Ferin's plan and I weep. The gall of it. The sacrifice that must be made. He will be our destruction and our saviour and he will pay an unthinkable price. (that last sentence is readable but smudged as though by drops of water).
Page 5
I guess little time remains. I figured I'd jot down a few of my final thoughts before... (there's a thick jagged line that zig zags across the page).
-----------------------------
The odd word, Zegak, is known to those who speak Dwarven. It's a mild Dwarven expletive that doesn't really translate into Common. It's an archaic word for depth, no longer really used in that context, now just a figurative casual swear like Dammit.

There's 120 pages to the book so it's a two hour read in total. If you are untrained in Knowledge (the planes) then successfully reading the whole book grants you 1 rank in that skill and you are considered trained. If you already have ranks in it then you gain a+1 bonus (not technically a rank so it doesn't count toward your rank cap).

"I'm not paying you to be subtle. This is all you're getting til you get some results. I've positioned some of my men in the old saw mill outside Lumbril, they'll do as you say within reason. Do what you have to do to lure out someone worthwhile. Kill some people, kidnap someone, burn the village down for all I care just make sure you're seen. Hire some local men, expendables we can dispose of later, no one too smart. I have another situation to deal with. Send one of my men to find me when you're done, he'll know how to reach me. And remember, we need them alive.

"Zaria. This latest scheme of yours has redeemed you somewhat for your previous failure. If you pull this off you will go far. I am sure we can find you more opportunities in Talon's Reach. Be advised however that this Lord Bluerose has a daughter who is a capable fighter, a paladin in fact. I would not be surprised if she chooses to pursue you once the ruse is revealed. From what I understand she is as impulsive as her father and will likely come at you alone or with a small group. I have a man in the city who can watch to see if she follows and contact my men via sending. If we can capture her we can use her as a bargaining chip with her father. When you reach the Hep Forest you will find the workers to help you shift the coin and a small squadron of my men willing to wait behind to deal with the pursuing party if necessary. When you arrive in Khrone, despatch the workers and await further instruction from me before leaving for Talon's Reach."

The dates themselves are meaningless without knowledge of the drow calendar. The opening entry you think reads thus;
"Reassigned to Operation Fithka. Prepare for ongoing surface operations."
The next entry begins with a word you don't recognise but based on context you suspect it to be an abbreviation similar to CO (Commanding Officer).
"CO put me in Daxba unit. For now guarding Zem Ba Ula." You don't know what that means, maybe co-ordinates or a code name?
"Co-ordinated push across swampland. Lizardfolk to be considered hostile. Take alive where possible."
"Site secured. Guard main building and perimeter until experiments complete."
"Relocate to abandoned mill. Secure perimeter and prepare ambush. Live capture of Lord Bennett, male human, dark haired, likely taking rearmost position outside of combat; CO of enemy forces. Other targets to be terminated. Force may contain allied group led by human in black hat named Ted, considered expendable. Specimen to be used on Bennett once identity confirmed and report via scroll. Abandon post after 48 hours of non contact and regroup at Outpost Nan Til."
"Reassigned to lead scout group Bithil Wen (3 subs). Explore lands SW of outpost for abandoned housing or other locations that can be secured. Report back to outpost when 3 such locations are found or after 1 week. If Lav'Kelananaf not present, confirmation must be forwarded."
"Location 1 secured. Old cabin in woods. No signs of recent occupation."

When the secrets of the Cataclysm, finally are learned
The Drow will walk the surface and our Queen shall be returned

Spoiler
"Matron Mother,
I assure you, the slight setback regarding the loss of the book will not hinder our plans too greatly. It seems to have been a simple mistake on behalf of the courier and not any outside interference. Everything else proceeds as planned but we will need more soldiers now we have the castle secured. Respectfully I request you send more men loyal to Lolth. I'd really rather not have any more worshipers of the God who Whispers. If possible, we could also use a mage skilled in the arts of illusion as a backup should the primary plan be foiled.
Lav'Kelananaf"

Symbols
Burntbeard family crest: signet ring
A snowflake: same as symbol on Sali's courtblade, associated with the (elven?) name Alazriel
Two wolf heads facing away from each other: familiar to Haldur, but he's not sure where he's seen it, in Chance (former pirate town on the south coast) or maybe on Banar (Haldur's home, dwarf community, on the continent south east of Chance. Mikul is to the southwest), on a ship's sail maybe, or a banner
Lionel Eskelion said he saw it to the north; a standard belonging to one of the Askari orc tribes
A reptilian looking eye
One if them is likely associated with Ferin.
Emerald Alliance: the group of four leaders who these symbols represent?
