** Slightly WIP - just details, etc **

Piersym just sort of... happened. He was born, but isn't sure of to who. His name holds no real meaning to him; he adopted it under extreme social pressure, constructing it by mashing together bits of the names of nearby places. Memories of his early life are lost to him, but everything starting about two decades ago remain etched into his mind with extreme clarity. It was around this time he found himself with an insatiable desire for knowledge and learning, both in regards to matters of the mind and on matters of the arcane.

What he lacks in formal training, he holds in extreme curiosity and a thoroughness in his studies. Delving into ancient ruins and dark tombs, Piersym has managed to amass not only a wealth of knowledge, but a few important trinkets as well. His most treasured item is his 'tome of worldly memory' - a small pocketbook that seemingly holds a nearly infinite amount of knowledge about anything and everything. An entire library unto itself, he has spent tens of thousands of hours perusing it, especially regarding the arcane and psionics; even still, every time he opens it, he finds new information. Not long after acquiring it, he discovered an interesting additional use to it - as he wrote things into it, they too could be recalled as if they had been written into the book by whoever was the original author. As he added knowledge to it, it became part of the book's body of information. Piersym maintains a separate notebook, in which he details more personal information, but also the results of his study of this rare tome. A few pages of his personal notebook are dedicated to just a small manual on how to use the tome, what places he's been, and what sort of articles he's written into the tome. He also maintains a list of places he'd like to visit and knowledge he'd like to learn more about, so that he can continue fleshing out the information in the book.

However, this has not reduced the value of other books to him. Much knowledge can only be found in the darkest places of the world, where he is keen to tread. Whenever he finds a new book, he is quick to extract what information he can from it, and store it within his favourite tome. He is also aware of the less material knowledge that exists in the world - in the spoken word, but especially in the minds of other creatures. He has not yet developed his psionic capabilities to the point that he can extract information from creatures in passing, but as an 'erudite' he has mastered the rare capability of 'mental contact' - a harmonization between his own mind and that of a willing (or unconscious) creature to extract psionic knowledge from it. Although he has never attempted such a feat in an attempt to extract arcane knowledge from a subject, he is keen to try - fitting subjects have been rare.

Personality

As a Synad, Piersym is really three minds in a single body: an Overmind, the Collective, and the Oracle. His Overmind is his core personality and constructs his surface thoughts and informs his perception of the world. Unfortunately, either by birth or by circumstance, Piersym's Overmind is fractured, resulting in dissociative episodes and periods of derealization. For a human, these episodes can be difficult to navigate and can create the sensation of looking in on yourself as if you are an actor in a movie, and that everything around you is dreamlike and unreal. For Piersym, the Collective instead takes over - in a rare occurrence for Synads - as the primary mind in these moments, resulting in a compounding effect to the episodes. Not only does he feel as if the world is unreal, but as if another mind is steering his actions. While this would be extremely uncomfortable for most, the Collective mind is a part of his identity and he is comfortable with relinquishing control during these moments of weakness, while his Overmind reorients itself.

The Collective's goals and desires align with Piersym, but its personality and how it perceives the world is quite different. Most of the time, it merely advises the Overmind on matters of knowledge and insight, drawing upon untold generations of Synad racial information. However, during these episodes when it shifts to the forefront of consciousness, it overrides the Overmind's role in the perception of the world. As a submind, the Collective was never 'meant' to perceive the world as a primary mind; in fact, its only perception as a submind is provided and filtered to it through the Overmind, and thus all of its perception is internal to the Synad's total mind. In so taking the forefront of the consciousness, and taking on the role of perception, the Collective incorrectly perceives the world around Piersym as internal to the mind - a form of Solipsism syndrome. This stirs feelings of isolation and detachment, and the Collective struggles with discerning what is and isn't a matter of the mind. This can be especially difficult in social situations - with Piersym referring to himself as "we", other creatures as "us" and incorrectly identifying other creatures as aspects of his own mind.

These moments of derealization have a few predictable triggers, and a few unpredictable ones. The primary way is through Psionic Focus. Whenever Piersym successfully meditates and achieves Psionic Focus, he immediately feels derealization as the Collective takes over. When he is utilizing certain Powers of his tied to knowledge or strong mental concentration for an extended period of time, such as Comprehend Languages, Know Direction and Location, Mind Thrust, and Levitate, he also experiences these episodes. Powers that only require concentration for a brief moment don't bring about the episodes (though if he's already in an episode, it won't cause it to dissipate, either). Attempting to make mental contact with a creature through his Erudite abilities also puts him into a state of derealization. During these moments, Piersym might be found staring off into the distance while performing actions with his body in a sort of possessed manner, which may be unsettling to many.

If Piersym finds himself without any power points, like any Synad, his subminds become visibly apparent as floating apparitions on either side of him. In these situations, the derealization episodes stop completely and the Collective remains firmly as a submind. It is possible that his psionic power relies entirely on his fractured state of mind to function at all.

We've had some discussions in the concept thread, but feel free to add more here.

One thing I'd like to ask about; I've got a bunch of coin left over that I don't really have much use for. As a wizard, I'd normally buy some spell scrolls and learn the spells by spending the coin, adding a bit of extra utility to the character. As an Erudite, though, I'd want to ask first.

Seems that the Erudite can learn from Power Crystals, just like how wizards can learn from scrolls (up to the maximum he knows for level if its on the psion/wilder list, otherwise it is 1 level lower than what he can currently manifest; so level 2 and level 1 respectively). Would I be able to spend a few coins on picking up a couple discipline power crystals for lvl 1 / maybe a power or two for level 2? I could also make the necessary psicraft checks for learning them as normal if desired.

As for his 'convert spell to power' ability, I'm intentionally leaving this one entirely up to you for how you want it to work in your world, so I don't want to leverage it before the game starts. Still, if you are willing, I wouldn't mind picking up at most two or three spells from bought scrolls to represent what he's learned so far with his experimentation with the ability - I'd even be fine with you picking which spells these would be. It seems he can learn anything arcane up to level 2? Including 0-level spells. I'd be willing to roll these checks and such as well (Psicraft plus Spellcraft).

I'm fine with you dropping some cash on Power stones in that way yes. Do be aware that power stones are not something easily bought in Se'traal. The ones you start with can easily have been acquired in Moonspire (in the Shadow Plane - see your OOC thread). To acquire more in future you would either need to return to Moonspire or find another city that has high psionic activity.

As for power freebies to start with. I have an idea of how to bring you in, assuming Gryndl is ok with my interpretation of where the Cursed Cookbook is. If I go with this angle, then acquiring the book from him will give a couple of initial freebies. So yeah, that's kinda hanging on him getting back to normality. Given that America has decided that Corona wasn't challenging enough and now they want a race war... well I can understand if it might take him a little time. XD But I'm hopeful it will all go well.
