Open for Business

Post by Charon »

Just a reminder that the mind of Charon is open for business at all times. Specifically;

As a player:

I'm interested in playing pretty much any system in my master book list.
viewtopic.php?f=34&t=35

For expediency, I have the following concepts ready to go.

Starfinder - Android Mystic (Level 3)
Made for a game that never began.

5e Sorceress named Scarlet, "magical girl" trope from Atari's abandoned game. Available at level 2 or 3.

3.5 or 5e cleric, "cursed" with incurable, non-contagious leprosy which he views not as a punishment but a burden to be carried to bring hope to others.

As a DM:

Always on board for running 3.5e/5e if there's enough interest (3 players min or 1 keen, active solo-er).

Could be persuaded to run WoD/Shadowrun with enough interest. Familiar with the systems/lore but lacking experience running them.

Running other systems on my book list may require bribes or blood sacrifice as I'm a first timer with them but I'm not completely opposed.

Also with enough interest (4 players min) I have a custom system that is in second draft stage but could use a playtest. It's a sci-fi setting with intra-party RP and cinematic combat based on the video game Alien Swarm (free on Steam) which is itself, based on the film Aliens.

It borrows from a few systems with the goal of being easy to learn, play and run in a mini-campaign format. Basic premise is objective based gameplay interspersed with fights against large hordes of alien bugs.
Current edition of the rulebook is here.

There's a game idea I've been mulling around in my head. I like the FMA d20 format I had going way back (every player can have more than one character; some games are solo some are group; shared world; etc) so I've thought about bringing that back under a new wrapping. I guess some call it a "Westmarches" style campaign? Named after a big campaign that works like that somewhere out there on the interwebs.

Generally speaking, I prefer 3.5e over 5e but I'm not decided yet. It'd take inspiration from DM's Guild's Oracle of War adventure series' optional module 'Salvage Bases and Missions', and may even still take place in Eberron's Mournland. Basically, every player character will belong to a 'salvage base', which is an operation to salvage and reclaim artifacts from the Mournland through short, episodic adventures called 'salvage missions'. Every player can have as many characters as they want, but each one can only be member to a single salvage base. The loot and discoveries while out on salvage missions are brought back to the salvage base, where they can be used to upgrade the base with new furnishings, in the creation of mundane or magic items, or otherwise.

The reason for multiple characters per player is to allow players to tailor the game to their activity level on the forums; if they want to be very active, they could have two characters out with groups and one out on a solo adventure; or they might just want a single solo character or a single group character. I'd probably only allow a single solo character out on an adventure per player just so I don't go and overwhelm myself. Of course, a solo character doesn't mean they have to be part of a solo base; multiple solo characters could work together to build up a base, and maybe even go out on group missions periodically.

I haven't worked out all the details yet, but when I do, it'd likely end up as a post around here looking for players. Just off of this, though, does this seem like something you'd be interested in playing? Would you have a preference between 3.5e and 5e?

Yeah sure, I'd be up for giving it a shot. Guess I have a mild preference towards 3.5, but reasonably comfortable with 5th if you go that way.

I was doing some reading on the Mournlands, and I must say I don't like the idea of magical healing not working - lol. Might be good for a warforged ranger type though. I've never really delved into the Ebberon setting before.

Interesting, that is one tidbit I overlooked with regards to the Mournlands. I think that's because I'm only starting to get into Eberron with 5e, and that's not yet a thing in that edition. Healing works normally there.

I like the flavor of it but I think it needs a tweaking. Apparently, Keith Baker (not trying to deify him or anything) originally wrote it such that the Mournlands just has less effective healing; halved. This was later changed by an editor for some reason.

In addition:

- Healing magics that are sourced from the Mournlands still work (magic items found there, potions found there, etc), but they don't work outside the Mournlands
- Mournland native creatures heal normally and can cast healing as normal (not a comfort, really)
- Dimensional pockets are not technically in the Mournlands, so they can be used as shelters (bag of holding, rope trick, portable hole)
- Druid Goodberries specifically work fine, as they're being conjured within the Mournlands
- Warforged work fine

It'd present some challenges, but I think I enjoy it for the type of campaign this would be; the salvage base would be on the edge of the Mournlands, where magical healing works fine, and it'd really create that feeling of respite from the harsh elements and emphasize how the salvage missions are meant to be short forays into highly dangerous territory.
